[OLD] Creating a Picasa Web Gallery

NOTE: Google has discontinued support for Picasa. If you have Picasa installed, it will still work as an editor and management tool. However, the web gallery piece no longer functions. Google will prompt you to use Google Photos in future.

This tutorial will walk you through creating and sharing a Picasa Web Gallery. Links to Picasa Web Galleries can be distributed in press releases, emails, and other communications, allowing members of the public to view any photos you share.

If you do not have Picasa installed on your computer, you can download it by clicking here. (Note: if you are not a computer admin, contact your friendly neighborhood ATS IT Pro!)

Preparing Photos for Uploading

1. On your computer or a share drive (ex. I:, S:, or H:), create a folder with photos for press release.

2. In Picasa, if it is scanning the appropriate location (see this guide for how to tell Picasa where to look) it will recognize that folder on the left-hand list.

3. In the top-right corner of Picasa, click “Sign in with your Google Account” and sign in. (ex. acesnews@gmail.com)

4. Once you’re signed in, locate the folder you want by scrolling to it.

5. Open each picture to add captions.

6. Type a caption below the photo if it doesn’t have one.

7. After adding each caption, return to the main Picasa viewer by clicking the “Back” button.

8. When all captions are added, select all of the photos you want to share in the web gallery.

9. Click the “Share” button at the bottom of the screen.

10. For Album visibility, choose “Limited, anyone with a link.”

11. For Image size – set to “Original size.”

12. No other changes are needed. Click “Upload.”

13. Once the upload finishes, click “View Online.” This will open a web browser.

14. Sign in again, if prompted.

15. In the open gallery, you can set an Album Cover under Action -> Album cover, selecting a representative photo, and clicking “Save.”

Optional: You can also add an album description.

16. To get the link you will share with others, click “Link to this album.”

17. It will now display a box with the link. Highlight the link and copy it.

18. Open a new browser window or tab, go to http://tinyurl.com, and paste in the link.

Optional: You can customize the link with the name of the photo gallery under “Custom alias.”

19. Click “Make TinyURL!”

20. Once TinyURL gives you the link, highlight the preview link and copy it.

21. This link can now be added to any document, email, press release, etc.
