Remote Desktop Connection with PocketCloud (iOS, Android, Windows Phone)

This step-by-step guide will show you how to connect to your Windows or Apple computer with the mobile app PocketCloud (free). Though the screenshots are taken from an iPad, the settings will be the same on every device.

If you are off campus, you will first need to connect to the CITES VPN. The VPN creates a safe, secure way to work from anywhere. Visit this page for iOS settings. Or see this CITES page for other devices.

Once you are connected to the CITES VPN, your mobile device will be on the same network as your office computer, allowing them to talk to each other through a remote connection.

Though many remote desktop apps exist, ATS Admin IT recommends Wyse PocketCloud. The free version works very well and is easy to set up.

Your local IT Pro can configure the PocketCloud connection to your computer. Your computer will also need to be set up to allow remote connections and set to never sleep.

Once all the pieces are in place and you’re connected to the VPN, follow these steps to connect to your office computer remotely:

1. On your mobile device, launch the PocketCloud App

2. Tap the large “Connect” button

3. Wait for PocketCloud to reach out and find your computer. If you are on a slow internet connection, this may take more then 10 seconds.

4. At your computer’s login screen, you can choose your profile, pull up the PocketCloud keyboard, and type your computer password.

5. Once connected, you can access and use everything your work computer: all files, software, share drives, and Lync.

NOTE: Bear in mind that phone calls through Lync will go through, but no one will be able to hear you and vice-versa. For mobile devices, we recommend the Lync App instead.

6. When you’re ready to disconnect from your desktop, tap the PocketCloud menu icon in the lower-left and tap “Disconnect.”

Troubleshooting Steps

Scenario: I can’t connect to the VPN!

Things to check: Are you actually connected to the internet? Even if you see the wireless signal, if you’re at a hotel or other public venue, you may have to open a web browser to finish logging in to the wireless network.

Scenario: I’m definitely connected to the internet; websites load. But I still can’t connect to the VPN!

Things to check: Your VPN settings may be incorrect, so double-check them. If you’re sure the settings are correct, it’s possible that the network you’re on simply won’t allow VPN connections. Another possibility is that the CITES VPN service is currently undergoing maintenance or other technical difficulties. Try back in 15 minutes.

Scenario: Okay, I’m online and connected to the VPN, but PocketCloud won’t connect to my computer.

Things to check: This usually means your office computer is asleep or turned off. If you can reach someone in your office, ask them to make sure the computer is on and awake. If it’s during university business hours, you can also call your IT Help Desk and an IT Pro can check the settings on your computer to make sure that you are set up to be allowed access.

Scenario: Hooray! I’m connected to my office computer! …Why is it so slow!?

Things to consider: The remote connection has to make its way through several layers and possibly thousands of miles to reach your computer. If you’re on a slow connection at a hotel or cafe, you will likely notice a significant delay between tapping or typing and the display showing the action. This is annoying, but normal.
